Red White and Blue Dessert

This soft serve red white and blue dessert take 5 minutes to make and is basically just a homemade blizzard!

How to make a red, white and blue dessert

You could absolutely make this ice cream treat from scratch by making a no churn ice cream. It’s just a can of sweetened, condensed milk, 2 cups of heavy cream that have been whipped and any other flavors you like.

For regular ice cream, you would freeze it for at least 6 hours. For a soft serve treat like a blizzard, you can still do that and then just follow the instructions below, or you can take it out of the freezer after about 4 hours and add your toppings while it is still soft.

For this recipe, I cheated and just used store-bought vanilla ice cream. Add a few scoops of ice cream to the bowl of a stand mixer with the paddle attachment, for you can use a hand mixer. Beat the ice cream for a minute or two until it is smooth and the consistency of soft serve.

What toppings should I use?

Add any toppings you like. For the red, white and blue blizzards, I added blueberries, raspberries and vanilla Oreos. Mix just until the toppings are incorporated evenly throughout the ice cream. Spoon into a glass and serve with whipped cream and extra toppings.

How to make these with kids

First of all, always check the label on whatever ice cream you are using to be sure it is safe for any allergies your kids might have. My son is allergic to egg so I always make sure to use an egg-free vanilla ice cream like Breyer’s.

My kids love to be in charge of running the stand mixer. They stand on stools and pull the lever to make it start and stop (with supervision). I also let them be in charge of the toppings so the measurements are not always exact like in the below recipe. I let them throw stuff in and make it their own.
